Secure Check Alliance is a coalition of organizations and individuals interested in improving U.S. national security by addressing delays in security checks.
By 2005, hundreds of thousands of immigration applications were delayed on name checks carried out by the FBI. We are aware of cases of individuals living the United States for over 10 years without a completed security check.
American Families United began lobbying on this issue in 2006 with the request that USCIS establish a review supervisory review process and reporting requirements for applications that have been pending for 6 months or more.
In 2007, to build broader momentum for change, American Families United formed Secure Check Alliance with Legal Immigrant Association.
That same year, Congresswoman Yvette Clark responded with a bill to address the issue, and Senator Carl Levin sponsored an amendment in the Senate which opened the door to a $20 million allocation in the 2008 federal budget to address the issue pending a plan by the FBI and USCIS to eliminate name check delays. The FBI and USCIS issued memos stating that green card applications would be granted after 6 months, and that delayed citizenship applications would be cleared over the following year.
This issue group is now dedicated to monitoring the situation and those who experience security check delays to get the government to act.
